I was amazed by the sea of stars that appeared after I uploaded this
image from my camera. I used a Sigma 10 mm Fisheye lens at F-2.8 ISO
800 for a 30 second exposure in Allegan County, Michigan earlier this week. The
conditions were perfect with a clear sky with no wind and no need for a
jacket during the warm Spring evening. (click on the image to see a much more detailed version)
On the Wing

I found this House Wren last weekend in Ottawa County, Michigan. I captured a moment with it in the air near the remains of an old tree stump, using a Canon 200mm F-2.8 L lens with my shutter set at 1/1300 of a second, F-11, ISO 800. House Wrens can be found in most of the Western Hemisphere.

I caught this pair of ducks floating on waters glowing from a sunset over Muskegon County, Michigan. The sun is shown reflecting on the water as well. (click on any of my photos to see an enlarged version)

Kestrel Mountain

This American Kestrel was a good model during the Bird of Prey Event held at the Blandford Nature Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan recently. I also captured the moment a neon green colored bug decided to climb on the Kestrel’s back, which from its perspective must have seemed like a mountain.

Lupine Beauty

The Lupine plant, genus Lupinus in the pea family.
I found these in Muskegon County, Michigan recently along with some Karner Blue butterflies. The caterpillars of the Karner Blue feed only on the Lupine and can’t survive without it. Since the habitat for the Lupine has been reduced dramatically, it’s affected the Karner Blue population, which is currently an “at risk” species.

Rare Karner Blue Butterfly

I found some Karner Blue Butterflies in Muskegon County recently. As they open their wings you see their iridescent blue coloring. I was happy to find these since they are an “at risk” species that depend entirely on Lupine plants for their caterpillars to feed on. I found these near a grouping of Lupine.

Eastern Hognose Snake

I ran across this Eastern Hognose snake while visiting the Riley Trails natural area in Ottawa County, Michigan today. It was about 3 feet long and on the ground among the pine needles. The pattern and coloring of it’s scales were very interesting as seen in this close up view. (click on any of my photos to see an enlarged version)

Long Eared Owl Napping

I caught this Long Eared Owl napping with it’s head tucked in during a windy afternoon earlier this month. It was near the top of a pine tree, about 80 feet off the ground, hidden among the branches and pine needles. The tree was swaying several feet from the brisk wind in Ottawa County, Michigan.

British Soldiers Lichen

I found these British Soldier Lichen, Cladonia Cristatella, growing recently in the Allegan State Game Area in Michigan. They are found throughout the state on decaying wood and in open fields. The red tips are reproductive structures.
